"The Heart of a Woman" SOLO SHOW

Happy New Year! It is that great time of year... when all the craziness of the holidays is over and it is time to reflect upon the past year. It is time to take a quiet moment and decide how to proceed into the new year. I seem to be bounding in to 2010 with my usual reckless abandon. I have taken on a lot of new opportunities. First and foremost on my mind is my solo show at the Hayley Gallery in New Albany, OH on January 31st. This gallery (and the owner, Hayley Savage) has been judged "Best of Columbus," and it really shows. The gallery itself is a beautiful space filled with an eclectic mix of regional art. My show, "The Heart of a Woman," being pre-Valentine's Day, is filled with romantic imagery as well as imagery representing traditional female roles. I have borrowed some perceptions of women from Klimt, (not known for his kind treatment of women), Matisse and Lichtenstein. I always think that history is a good place to start with any new endeavor and these historical references mark the beginning of my process for this show. Also included are several still life pieces with white tablecloths and chandeliers, my grandmother's teacups...and flowers. One canvas entitled "Faith" shows 5 boxes stacked together and in them are images of flowers and birds and kites. No matter how dark things are, there is always the hope of spring. Also included is "Survivor Dance", 3 rows of paper dolls that look like they are dancing. The paper dolls represent how fragile life can be and also the support of women for each other. If one of the dolls in the chain is "broken" (as with breast cancer) the others fall too. However, when they all support each other miracles (survivors) happen. This one was inspired by my friend Sara. I have explored a couple of new techniques in the process of getting the 30-40 canvases ready for this show. "Angel" is a mosaic technique with the same approach used in Renaissance times. Hundreds of really tiny pieces of fabric are evident and it gives an interesting look. "Peace" is meant to simulate a stained glass window with a dove in the center. I enjoyed these new techniques and will continue to use them.I also introduced women's imagery to my process. I like the combination of graphic imagery, pattern and texture.
With this show, my hope is that in this age of political correctness, where I fear everything is becoming too generic, the more traditional view of a woman's life is still celebrated.

Holiday Boutique in Studio #315

What a fun night in Studio #315! It was a party! Our guests, Trish, Pam, Meg and Katharine rolled out their wonderful art to provide clients with holiday treats! It was fun to see the looks on people's faces when they walked in and saw the feast of colors and holiday cheer. Everyone had good wishes and many went home with a special gift. The sugar rush gave us the energy to enjoy a festive few hours before the "white death" descended on the Tri-State! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. What a great way to wrap up the year. It has been a very good year.

Starfire Event

Friday December 4th is the evening dedicated to the arts at the Resthaven Barn, home of the Woman's Art Club, in Mariemont. This event will benefit Starfire, a non-profit organization that "provides over 460 teenagers and adults with disabilities a chance to participate in the community through social and community service activities". 30 artists are participating and a few plan to demonstrate. All artists will donate 30% of their sales to this worthy cause. The event is from 7-10. Tickets are still available at www.starfirecouncil.org There will be valet parking the night of the event. It promises to be a fun evening with plenty of food and drinks and GREAT ART.

This is the last show for me until my SOLO SHOW AT THE HAYLEY GALLERY. I plan to enjoy the Holiday Boutique at my Pendleton Art Center studio the 18th and 19th of December and then fully concentrate on finishing the last few pieces for Hayley. The Alumni Show at Xavier is still up and will remain until December 18. The show at Gallery 42 will remain in place until mid-January.

Gallery 42 Juried Open

These two pieces were accepted for the Gallery 42 Juried Open art exhibition.
The opening reception is November 14th from 4-8 with awards being announced at 6. The juror for this show was Kay Hurley.

"Celebration of Women" opening at the XU Cohen Center

Last night was the opening of the show to mark the 40th anniversary of women at Xavier. The crowd of art enthusiasts were treated to a provocative show as well as yummy food and plenty of spirits. Jessica Flores served as juror for the show and chose 56 pieces from over 350 entries. Local painter Shirley Findsen and I were the only Cincinnati artists in attendance last night, as well as represented in the show. The grand prize went to a Columbus artist named Stephanie Rond, who made the trip. She was surprised and thrilled that her piece entitled "War on Beauty" won the top honors. She will now have a solo show at the XU art gallery in 2010. If you have a chance to check out this show, it is up until Nov. 8th.

Bricks for Breast Cancer

If you haven't heard, the Bricks for Breast Cancer auction is coming up again. This will be the third year that I have participated. Art galleries, stores and art centers all over the city are collecting the bricks generously donated by artists, schools and other individuals. Last year's auction raised over $45,000. for research to find a cure. The auction gives you the opportunity to bid on the individual bricks as well as buy tickets for the gift basket raffle. It is a fun event with food and lots to see. Here's the info:

Indian Hill Art Show

November 13th and 14th I will participate in the annual Indian Hill Art Show. It is at the beautiful Indian Hill Church. We attended last year and were very impressed with the quality of the artists who were included. Bruce and Nancy Neville, Trish Weeks, Kay Hurley were all there, to name a few. It promises to be a fun event and sale. Friday night the hours are from 6-9 and Saturday it will be held from 10-4.

Art on the Levee

The opening at Art on the Levee was a festive night for those who attended. The support from fellow Pendleton artists was greatly appreciated. Many friends and family stopped by as well. People who were unfamiliar with our work were surprised and thrilled by the whimsical garden inspired works. Allison's glass looked spectacular in the window space. The food was a hit, especially the Key Lime Tartlets a la Costco. All in all, a great evening and wonderful collaborative show. If you haven't seen it yet, stop by before September 8th.

Art at the X again!

The annual nationally juried show at Xavier will open on October 2nd. 56 pieces were selected from over 350 entries from 31 states. The show was curated by Jessica Flores, the Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Cincinnati Art Museum. I am happy to report that "Grace," pictured here, is among the works accepted! The show theme is A Celebration of Women. XU galleries are so beautiful and the faculty so warm and inviting... the opening should be lots of fun. It will be from 6-8 on the 2nd.

September the 19th is the Gala fundraiser to benefit Habitat for Humanity. It is being held at Longworth Hall. This piece entitled "Our House" will be on display and available for sale. Art on the Levee

Allison Sanders and I will open a show of new works called "Chandelier Garden" at Art on the Levee-Newport on the Levee- August 7-September 8. We met today with the manager, Francisco, and planned the space. The location is new, it's the old American Eagle store space. It is very nice, well lighted, and spacious. Allison will show many of her glass chandeliers and cones and I will debut some new works highlighting chandeliers in the compositions. I will also show some florals and garden inspired works. It promises to be a colorful, fanciful and whimsical show. We are excited that the show will remain in place through the Labor Day weekend. If you plan to be around for the fireworks, stop by to see our work. I will post hours for the opening ASAP. There will be appetizers and good local wine.

New Gallery Representation

I am pleased to announce that I am now represented by The Hayley Gallery in New Albany, Ohio. This very hip gallery in the Columbus area was recently voted the "Best Gallery in Columbus 2009". It hosts a wonderful eclectic mix of paintings, glass, jewelry and ceramics. You can find the work of Korki Bowen there too. The space is an old firehouse that is beautifully arranged to compliment the art. Owner Hayley Savage has turned the space into a first class gallery and general meeting place to have a good time and talk art. If you are in the Columbus area, perhaps headed to the Easton shopping area, stop by to see this space with it's funky art by Ohio artists. Be sure to tell Hayley that you heard about it from me!

New Studio at Pendleton Art Center

Work is underway in our new third floor studio at Pendleton. Allison Sanders and I are eagerly organizing renovations to the former ArtWorks studio #315. It is a large space with lots of room, light, and storage. On the down side; it's painted red, blue and yellow. (Must have been a color wheel reminder for the kids). We are hanging drywall over the warped plywood divider, adding new track lights, painting it white (with an orange accent wall) and generally making the space our own! Our grand opening is June 26 for Final Friday. Please plan to join us for a glass of wine and a toast to our new digs!

Spring Shows

It's been a busy couple of months. The shows are winding down and it's time to get down to the serious business of summer! It has been fun to attend all of the great events. The first fun event was the Flower Show. It was a 10 day extravaganza in a tent. Although the tent provided shelter from the rain... sometimes... it did little to repel the sleet, cold, and wind. We began the week with boots, heavy coats and gloves, and ended the week with shorts and flip flops! It's April in Ohio! It was a very successful show for me and I enjoyed getting to know the other artists. That's a good way to get a group to bond-put them in a tent for ten days together under extreme conditions! Thanks to all of the people who attended and sent such good wishes my way. I had a blast and hope to see you all at the Pendleton Art Center!

The next show on the agenda was the show in Rising Sun for the Pendleton Center there. Pictured above is the Best of Show winning horse sculpture. It is truly amazing. Jackie Braden, Shannon Godby and I were all represented and had fun at the opening.

My show at the Pop Revolution Gallery remains up through June 9. If you get a chance, stop in to see it. Jim Crosser's work and mine meld well for a great show titled "May Flowers". This gallery is staffed with two hard-working owners, Fran Michaels and Ben Jason Neal. They not only are accomplished artists but also are excellent framers. It's a great place to view shows, get frames and just talk art!

The Day/Evening in the Garden at the Taft are over. What a beautiful event. The weather was perfect and the decor was wonderful. The table settings were spectacular. It was a magical evening made even more special by good friends to share it.

Finally, the Fitton Center for Creative Arts is a place to check out. If you haven't been there, it is a beautiful facility on the Great Miami River in downtown Hamilton. The 44th Regional Art Competition is still on display through the second week of June. The show is spread through the first floor common area (where my piece entitled "Sunday" is) as well as two galleries upstairs. It is a wonderfully eclectic show; ranging from the very realistic to the playful and abstract. Judges awards are scattered throughout the show. Try to get there to see this show and top notch facility if you can.

Now it's time to get back to work and look to upcoming events. Of major importance is our big STUDIO MOVE! Allison and I move in the #315 at the Pendleton on June 1st! Details to follow for our big opening celebration!

May Flowers!

May is a busy month in the Cincinnati art world. There are openings every weekend in galleries around the city. Saturday May 9th is no exception. The Pop Revolution Gallery in Mason opens the show entitled "May Flowers" that will showcase my work with the work of Jim Crosser. It is a relatively new gallery that is right next door to Gallery 42. It's at the intersection of Rt. 42 and Mason Montgomery Road. Gallery 42 is showing work by Stacie Seuberling, Kay Hurley and Barb Chenault. The opening hours are from 4-8.

May 20 & 21 are the dates for the Evening/Day in the Garden event at the Taft Museum. This is a ticketed event which promises to be elegant and an evening/day to remember. We will be attending the Evening event and look forward to it. I am showing 9 of my favorite collage paintings for this event. Other artists participating are: Bruce and Nancy Neville, Kay Hurley, Trish Weeks and more.

Fitton Center for Creative Arts 44th Regional Juried Show

I just got word today that this piece entitled "Sunday" is accepted for the Fitton Center's Regional Juried Show. The show opens April 26th, the last day of the Flower Show... not sure how that will work. The opening is from 2-4. Maybe someone will cover for me so I can attend. New venue for me and certainly an impressive building and gallery space!

Ready for the Taft!

Okay, so the Cincinnati Flower Show is only a week and a half away... I should be talking about that. I will post some images later that will be on display there, (and hopefully, sold). But, today is a milestone. I finally finished the last piece for the Taft Day/Evening in the Garden event in May. I am pleased with this one. It is called "Grace". I thought of the name when in church yesterday. I was listening to the sermon and Dr. Kent mentioned living with grace. It is something to aspire to; that's for sure. The dictionary defines the word grace as:
1. elegance or beauty of form, manner, motion, or action.
2. a pleasing or attractive quality or endowment.a virtue or excellence of divine origin: the Christian graces.

The beauty of nature inspires me. The anticipation of a family gathering inspires me. My home and a beautiful table inspire me.
I'm working on acquiring grace.

5" x 7" Mini Originals

New for the Cincinnati Flower Show.... Matted 5" x 7" original collage paintings. Lace tablecloths and vases and flowers in the garden; all these and more. They are matted to fit in standard 11" x 14" frames and are very affordable. I will have a couple at Pendleton Final Friday this weekend, March 27th & 28th. I hope that you like them!

getting ready for the flower show...April 18-25

Seventy degrees outside and the bulbs are beginning to pop! It is time to think about cleaning up the winter debris and enjoying the spring bulbs... and planning the summer gardens. We will no doubt have another blast of winter, but there is a hint of spring today. There is no better time than now to plan to attend the Cincinnati Flower Show in Symmes Township Park. Last week the 20 artists selected for the Artists' Studio for the Flower Show assembled for an informative meeting. We learned a lot about what to expect. The new venue promises to be spectacular. There will be 80 vendors, Daveed's food, and many exhibits to see. Everything from planters to table displays will be showcased. It is a huge undertaking and will be well worth the price of a ticket. Parking is available at Rozzi's Fireworks across the street. Check out the link on my homepage for ticket information and directions. Plan to attend this special Cincinnati event. See you there!
